テーマ：第二の自然

ニューヨーク証券取引所の向かいに建つタワーマンション30階からは、マンハッタン南部の金融街を一望できる。そこには、高層ビルが立ち並び、道路網が張り巡らされ、橋が島々をつなぐという、人工的な都市の景観が広がっていた。こうした環境の中で、自然を感じられる住空間を創出し、施主に安らぎをもたらすことが本プロジェクトのテーマであった。
リビングルームには、既存のRC梁の下に、間接照明を組み込んだボックス型の梁を配置。それらが木の幹のように交差し、幹の隙間から柔らかな光が広がるようなデザインとした。幅2.75m、高さ2.28mの大型引き戸には、オーク材の木目の柔らかい部分をサンドブラスト加工で削り出し、凹凸を際立たせた。この扉を開けると、東側の寝室から朝日が差し込み、リビングルーム全体を包み込む。
玄関脇の造作棚にも、深く刻まれた木目加工を施し、木パネルの隙間から漏れる光が木漏れ日を思わせる仕掛けとした。直接的な自然ではないが、自然の要素を取り入れた空間デザインにより、施主に心の安らぎを感じてもらうことを目指した。

Theme: The Second Nature

From the 30th floor of a condominium tower across from the New York Stock Exchange, one can overlook the financial district of Lower Manhattan. The view is dominated by high-rise buildings, an intricate network of streets, and bridges connecting the islands—an entirely man-made landscape. The challenge of this project was to create a residential space where the client could experience a sense of nature and tranquility within this urban environment.
In the living room, box-shaped beams with integrated indirect lighting intersect beneath the existing RC beams, resembling tree trunks. Soft light filters through the gaps between these "trunks," filling the space with a warm glow. The large sliding wooden door (2.75m wide × 2.28m high) is crafted from sandblasted oak veneer, where the softer parts of the wood grain are removed to create a deeply textured surface. When opened, the door allows the morning sunlight from the east-facing bedroom to flood into the living room.
Next to the entrance, a built-in shelf features deeply carved wood grain panels, with light gently seeping through the gaps—evoking the dappled sunlight filtering through trees. While not nature itself, this design integrates natural elements to create a serene environment that brings comfort and peace of mind to the client.
